I don`t know the reason for that. The weather has changed radically. The penguins seems to be all right, though.

Something what i found about a renewal of the plumage, moulting:

Chicks
Before they can leave the nest, they have to moult to their juvenile plumage. Afterwards they are ready to go, and they will not return to the colony until they are ready to breed. (2-5 years, depending of the species) http://www.pinguins.info/Engels/Kuikens_eng.html

As soon as the chicks have their juvenile plumage, they can leave the nest. Now starts one of the most dangerous periods in the life of a penguin. They have to learn how to catch their own food and at the same time avoid predators.

Adults
Adult penguins (except the galapagos penguins) moult after the breeding period. Before that moulting they go to sea and stuff a lot of food, and than return ashore. During the moulting period (about three weeks), their feathers aren't waterproof so they would freeze and drown. http://www.pinguins.info/Engels/Ruien_eng.html

After completion of the breeding season, adults spend time at sea building up body fat reserves prior to undergoing their annual moult. The moult takes around 2 to 3 weeks, and during this time birds spend considerable amounts of time tending to their plumage. Our bird has made a gain of 22 kms further toward home over the last 24 hours, a good performance pushing pretty much southward.
More pertinently he’s also put an additional 6kms between him and the sandy beaches of Campbell island overnight. He seems to be swimming
between 2-3 kph today, a bit slower than yesterday – this includes an hour when he seemed to get distracted and put on no distance at all.
Wonder what’s caught his interest?

Our bird has travelled 31 kms closer to his homeland over the last 24 hours, a big gain on the 8 kms he made over the day before. That’s the
good news. He’s closer to Campbell Island though (just 69 kms away) so let’s hope his fetish for sandy beaches doesn’t surface as he
continues to head southeast. Thankfully Campbell is southwest – upwind and upcurrent from where our bird is. He looks to be swimming at
around 3-4 kph although of course not in a straight line. Makes for a long trip home.

Jos tunnet intohimoa ja sinulla on hetki aikaa, voisitko selittää nämä käytetyt laadut Suomessa yleisesti käytetyn mittajärjestelmän avulla ymmärrettäviksi?

Mikäli tarkoitat näitä 'kms' ja 'kph',ne kuuluvat meidänkin metrijärjestelmäämme:kms = kilometres ja kph = kilometres per hour eli kilometriä tunnissa.Muita mittayksiköitä en tekstistä löytänyt.

Noi voi jee, niitähän minä. Huomaan nyt, että olen ajatellut suomeksi noiden mittayksiköiden kohdalla - keskellä englanninkielistä lausetta! , kilometrisekunti ~ kilometriä sekunnissa (nopeudesta käytettynä Englannissa, Amerikassa?), kilopondi ja tunti ~ kilopondi voiman yksikkö, mutten voinut ymmärtää sen liittämistä tuntiin. Ja ennenkaikkea en voinut ymmärtää mitä ne voisivat ilmaista tuossa tekstissä, jonka osina olivat! What an Earth!??

Olipa hyvä, että tunnet intohimoa usvat , sillä nythän tässä ei ole mitään epäselvää!

Happy Feet on edennyt 22 km kotia kohden viimeisen 24 tunnin aikana. Se on hyvä suoritus, vieden sitä aika paljon etelään. "Ylimääräistä" matkaa tuli kuutisen kilometriä sen yöpymisestä hiekkarantaisella Cambelin saarella viime yön. [edit. :ei yöpynytkään, vaan vältti nuo hiekkaiset rannat, ja säilytti terveytensä! - vrt. usvan käännöstä seuraavassa viestissä!] Se näyttää uineen 2-3 kilometria tunnissa tänään, hiukan eilistä hitaammin - tähän kuuluu tunti, jolloin se ei edennyt lainkaan. Ihmettelen mikä vei sen huomion tuolloin?
