15. päivänä on video, jota ei ole aiemmin julkistettu. Siinä näkee puuosien haprastumisen vuosien saatossa. Monty istuu T-orella ja Glesni liitty seuraan. Puu ei kestänyt kahta lintua vaan katkesi. Siksi näitä puuosia on uusittava 3-4- vuoden välein. Kumpikaan lintu ei vahingoittunut.

Thank you for all your comments and suggestions regarding a perch replacement made from composite, recycled materials.
Q. Would it have enough grip?
A. Yes, moulded materials can be made to have a high degree of grip; grippier (is that a word?) in fact, than actual wood (think of our current boardwalk - you can't 'make' yourself slip on it, even when wet).
These things can be made by 3D printing these days, we'll start our search on Monday morning.

Monty is standing on an older version of the birch-perch (larch perch 2017) when Glesni joins him.
Neither Monty nor Glesni (nor the pheasant) were injured, but we have to make sure this doesn't happen again.

Berthyn viihtyi pesällä syyskuuhun asti ja se oli 101,4 päivän ikäisnen, kun se lähti muutolle vanhimpana poikasena ikinä.
Berthyn oli myös painavin poikanen Dyfin historiassa - ja sillä oli hirmuinen nälkä aina.
Monty ansaitsee tänä talvena todella lomansa.

Hankimme äskettäin 4000 talteenotettua liuskekivilaattaa Llanberisistä (Pohjois Wales) uuteen rakenteilla olevaan Dyfin luonnonpuiston keskukseen. Laatat olivat unohdettuina Llyn (järvi) Perisin taloissa vuosikymmeniä.
Ohessa viimeinen kuva keskimmäisestä poikasesta Perisistä, joka nimettiin jäätikköjärvi Perisin mukaan.

We recently acquired 4,000 reclaimed roof slates from a council estate in Llanberis (we did tell them) in north Wales for our new Dyfi Wildlife Centre.
These houses have overlooked Llyn (Lake) Peris for decades.
This is the last photo we took of our very own Peris, named after the glacial lake, at the end of August this year.

Dyfissä ollaan huolissaan Australiasta, sen luonnosta, asukkaista ja eläimistöstä.
Kaikki valtiot ja niiden johtajat eivät suhtaudu vakavasti ilmaston muuttumiseen ja lämpenemiseen jne.........
mm koalat on suuressa vaarassa kömpelyyden ja hitauden takia. Niiden selviämisstrategiana on kiivetä puuhun ja kiertäytyä palloksi. Kaikkihan me olemme huolisamme Australian tilanteesta.

Our thoughts this Christmas week are with with our friends in Australia.
As the country burns in record 50°C heat in every major city and in every state, the toll on people and wildlife is truly catastrophic.
Yet, the Prime Minister there is a climate denier, rubbishing scientists' evidence-based claims linking the highest temperatures ever recorded in Australia with global warming (whilst on holiday thousands of miles away).
The leaders of Brazil, the US and many other countries are also deniers, putting greed and fossil-fuel industries above all else, no matter how much devastation and death their actions bring.
We try not be political here, but how can we when things like this happen?
Imagine if the whole of Wales was burnt to the ground? Well, Australia has seen twice that area disappear to the fires in just a few weeks.
Koalas are slow-moving animals and their usual danger-avoidance strategy is curling into a ball atop a tree; they don't really have many vocalisations. Last week people heard koalas 'screaming' for the first time as raging fires engulfed their habitats.
Let's hope this carnage ends soon for the people and wildlife of Australia, our thoughts are with you.

Telyn hautoo kolmea munaa toukokuussa. Kaikki kuoriutuivat ja lähtivät muuttomatkalle ajallaan. Samoin kävi edellisenä vuonna. Huomioitavaa on, että kuusi poikasta on selvinnyt maailmalle kahden vuoden aikana. Tekeehöhän Telyn ensi vuonna hattutempun?
Kun puhutaan "kolmesta" Telyn toivottavasti palaa kolmen kuukauden kuluttua. Vuonna 2020 on odotettavissa myös, että Alys, Dinas ja Helyg palaisivat Britteihin, Telynin ensimmäinen Dyfin jälkikasvu. Eikös se olisi jotain....

ADVENT DAY 23

Here's Telyn incubating her three eggs in May this year.
She successfully laid three eggs and raised all her chicks to migration age in 2018. She did the same in 2019.
It's pretty remarkable that she has raised six chicks in just two years, will 2020 be a hat-trick of hat-tricks for her?
Talking of 'threes', Telyn will hopefully be back with us in three months, but this time we'll have one added thing to look out for.
Alys, Helyg and Dinas are due back in the UK in 2020, Telyn's first Dyfi brood from 2018.
Now wouldn't that be something...

Arguably the best photo we took in 2019 -
Berthyn airborne, Hesgyn left.
Over the last 10 years we've improved our osprey camera system 10 times. We intend to do exactly the same during the next decade.
Look out soon for details of striking new ways we'll be able to view our ospreys - and other animals - from 2020 onwards.

Joulupäivä

Dyfi toivottaa hyvää joulua ja onnellista uutta vuotta tällä iloisen ja onnellisen kuvalla. Taustalla on uusi rakenteilla oleva Dyfin luontokeskus. Viime viikolla siellä pidettiin vapaaehtoisten työntekijöiden joulujuhla. Keskus avautuu 1. huhtikuuta, jolloin sääksien pesinnän seuranta alkaa.

CHRISTMAS DAY
To end our advent series, here's the happiest photo of the year.
Last week we had our usual volunteer Christmas party and as a special treat we showed some of them around their new 'office' for the first time.
Other than the contractors, our volunteers were the first people to set foot in the new Dyfi Wildlife Centre. After half an hour we had to leave, fearing for the integrity of the newly laid floor - so many jaws were hitting it!
They absolutely loved it.
We hope you will too - not long to wait now, we're still on track to open in April.
Have a great Christmas and New Year folks - and thank you so much for all your support over the last 12 months. It really means a lot to us.
