Yesterdays Loch of Lowes Widlife Blog
February 22nd, 2011 by jonathan
Morning folks,
Its a bit of a grey misty morning here at Loch of the Lowes but its great to see all the waterbirds returning to the loch.
Earlier on I counted 40 odd Wigeon, 20 or so Goldeneye, 6 Goosander and a pair of Great-crested grebe.
Although the grebes were some distance away I could see that they were already sporting their ornate head plumes. It shouldn’t be long before they’ll be performing their elaborate courtship display, which is quite something to behold. The drama begins with the pair raising and shaking their head plumes at one another. They then come together with weed in their bills, rising up and ‘dancing’ breast to breast in the water, turning their heads from side to side in perfect synchronicity. Breathtaking!

2.3. Jonathan Loch of Lowes Widlife Blog:
...As we’re now only weeks away from the return of our beloved ospreys I thought I would take the opportunity to give you an update on the whereabouts of the Bassenthwaite & Loch Garten tracked birds, plus news of a couple of early arrivals!...
...Meanwhile Rothes, the 2nd year female from Loch Garten, is still on the Ilha de Unhocomozinho off the coast of Guinea-Bissau....
Elsewhere there have already been two reported sightings on Birdguides of osprey in the UK! One bird was spotted just yesterday at Kincraig by Loch Insh, near Kingussie. This follows an earlier sighting down in Devon on the 23rd February.
I’ll bring you more news as and when I hear of any movements.

first ospreys are back in the uk, with perhaps 5 being seen heading north in the last week. Looks like an early arrival for some as the weather conditions in the uk have been good recently
good to see you again millan
A male Osprey has returned today to one of the monitored UK nest sites, this bird at the Glaslyn site in North Wales is believed to be the resident male, so it could be anytime soon for the both the loch of the Lowes or loch Garten birds, some UK Ospreys have arrived very early this year
Good news from Glaslyn, North Wales, the female arrived back today and from Rutland Water the first of the males has made it back
Good news from the Lowes, lets hope its her
Great to see she made it back
Its a real shame we cant post any pictures from the Lowes nest cam
Very very windy at the nest today
