Toivottavasti Rothesillakin on kaikki hyvin

Please don't fret unduly about Rothes, just yet anyway. We think she is ok, but something might not be quite right with the tag, perhaps something simply like some feathers preventing the sun hitting the solar panel, hence low voltage, hence poor/no data.
Tore edennyt reilut 600 km kahden päivän aikana.

Viimeinen paikannus on metsäisellä alueella.

Viimeisin blogi R.Thaxtonilta. Rothes todennäköisesti täysin kunnossa, mutta lähetin epäkunnossa. Tore ja Bynack etenevät hienosti

...........but to be positive, the good news first......... we think Rothes is ok, which ultimately is what is most important, so please relax. However, we think that her tag has malfunctioned and is no longer working. This is very disappoiniting, to lose contact with this bird at a most exciting time as she begins her return migration back to.......who knows where.......We might not now find out. Or maybe we will? Other studies using this tag technology have had birds that have "gone off the radar" and were considered missing-in-action, and yet have re-appeared and started transmitting again, sometimes much, much later, years even. So we will have to wait and see.
You'll be disappointed I know, as we are, so I thought you might appreciate our take on the situation. I've consulted with colleagues more technically minded than I am, on their interpretation on the latest data, as such, on Rothes. We are of the view that it is certainly tag failure rather than bird mortality. From data checks we can see the battery was low before the first movements. It looks like the tag was struggling to acquire GPS fixes before we eventually got a day’s worth of locations, before the levels begun dropping considerably. Based on battery manufacturer's data, the solar powered PTT can be expected to last for up to three years, if the unit is undamaged and the solar panel remains exposed to the sun. One researcher has reported a lifetime of over five years for an early version of these PTTs.
Whilst we might have lost contact with Rothes after following her fortunes for the past two years, what we do know is that next spring, in just six months time, it's hopefully her time and we can expect her to return somewhere to breed. We must take a close look at any leg-ringed birds that turn up here at Loch Garten and elsewhere and see if we can spot her. Here's hoping.
It is though, good news on this year's youngsters Tore and Bynack who are both doing very well. Tore has worked on down through Mauritania and roosted about 150 miles from the southern border. Bynack is about 30 miles west of Toulouse and about 45 miles north of the Spanish border.

A wee blog-ette of great news....

All is not lost, Rothes is fine. Her tag might be failing or faulty, but we have confirmation that she is indeed alive, and yesterday was in Morocco!! Hoorah!

Hei,

Osaakos joku muu vastata siihen, vai kysytäänkö Mattsilta
